January and February 2009

Christmas events this year started with a Quiz Night held at the Kidsgrove Cricket Club, followed later in December by our annual Carol singing when forty residents and friends gathered outside the Clough Hall Hotel. The Rev. Paul Howard officiated and the Salvation Army band accompanied the carols which included favourites such as "O Come All Ye Faithful", "Silent Night" and "In The Bleak Mid-winter". The mulled wine, provided by courtesy of the hotel and mince pies provided by the Residents Association were much appreciated afterwards. Our Christmas Dinner this year was held at the Travellers Rest, Scholar Green, an excellent meal and an enjoyable evening giving us the opportunity to socialise. There is no doubt that getting to know other residents is a key ingredient for the success of any residents' association.

Unfortunately, the Christmas meeting and buffet scheduled for December had to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. However, we have an interesting and varied programme of events planned for the year ahead and welcome anyone in Clough Hall to join us ... admission is free and there is no membership fee.

Our committee intends to continue to build on strong working links with other organisations, for example, Planning for Real and the Newcastle based 50+ Forum.

The start of the New Year is an opportune time for the Residents Association to thank those who regularly attend and provide valuable input to our meetings.

We are indebted to Kidsgrove Police who do an excellent job in our area, for the updates they provide on local issues and for their support with the ‘surgeries'.

We would like to thank the Councillors, who regularly attend our meetings and provide much valued support and input.

Finally, we must not forget our guest speakers who give up their time, providing us with varied and interesting topics.

Early last year pupils from Clough Hall School organised a computer course for our residents; this, along with other Community Involvement work and events in the period leading up to Christmas, was very much appreciated and I am certain the joint involvement will be explored more fully in the future.
