Government Recycling Policy

I have received this reply from Newcastle Borough Council to the question of taking recyclable materials to recycling sites other than in Staffordshire. - "An unintended consequence of the Government drives to 'limit' waste produced has been the 'closing' of the CA sites in each county to those who don't pay their Council Tax to LAs within that County". ....

‘LAs' are Local Authorities and ‘CA' means Civic Amenity sites, (Recycling sites to us).

The recycling site at Federation Road Burslem is therefore ‘Out of Bounds' as Stoke is a ‘Unity Authority'. The nearest local site is at Bemersley Road Biddulph, which will not accept gas bottles or asbestos. The Newcastle site will not accept gas bottles, asbestos nor brick, hardcore or concrete.

The only fully non restricted site is at Leek, Fowlchurch Road. The three Staffordshire sites are now only open for five days of the week. See below for details of  Opening Days. All Staffordshire recycling sites are open on Spring and Summer bank holidays.

Opening Days:

Bemersley Rd:- Wednesday, Thursday, Friday Saturday and Sunday.

Leycett Lane:- Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Fowlchurch Rd.:- Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Opening times for Staffordshire Recycling Sites are:-

Summer Opening, (BST) Monday to Friday 9.00am to 6.00pm

Saturday to Sunday 9.00am to 5.00pm

Winter Opening, (GMT)  Monday to Sunday 9.00am to 4.30pm

Open Bank Holidays, 9.00am to 5.00pm

Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day.

P.S. Plastic bottles can be recycled locally at Tesco Stores, Kidsgrove.

Just One More Thing - It's Recycle Week in Newcastle

Recycle Week kicks off in Newcastle on June 2nd with a series of events and displays set to take place.

Julie Whittaker and Jane Finnemore from the Council's Recycling and Waste Services will be out and about advising residents of ‘Just One More Thing' that they can recycle in the week which runs until June 6th.

Recycle Week is about inspiring the Borough's residents to recycle more by showing them just how easy it can be - and that their efforts really do make a difference and benefit our environment.

‘Just One More Thing' is intended to raise awareness of everyday items such as aerosols, clear glass jars, pet food packaging and paper - that can be recycled but are often forgotten in our usual weekly recycle.

The campaign is designed to demonstrate that by increasing our commitment to recycling more of the everyday items we normally don't include, we can all easily boost recycling, help to reduce waste, save energy and at the same time help tackle climate change.

Julie and Jane will be in Newcastle town centre advising residents of what they can recycle on Monday 2nd June and Wednesday 4th June.

Other things to watch out for include:-

* A large display during Recycle Week in Newcastle Library in Ironmarket.

* The Borough Museum and Art Gallery will also be showing residents how easy it is to recycle more.

* The Borough Council has teamed up with Knutton St. Mary's Primary School and Newcastle Community High School who have made sculptures out of recycled materials as part of a project associated with Recycle Week.

Come and do your bit for Recycle Week with ‘Just One More Thing' that you can recycle - and remember to recycle your clear glass jars and other items on your blue kerbside collection service, or at one of the 18 Recycling Bank Sites in the Borough.

For more information contact Julie Whittaker, the Borough Council's  Behavioural Change Fund Co-ordinator, on 01782  742711 or e-mail her at wastemanagement@newcastle-staffs.gov.uk
